Rough Night

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Last night I partook in the Delafield Brewhaus Oktoberfeast party and it sure was awesome. It was so awesome in fact that the food overload kept me up all night long as my stomach struggled to churn the soup, salad, steak, scallops, mashed potatoes, cake, and beer that I crammed down my gullet.

I finally was getting some sleep when I heard an incredibly loud noise from the kitchen. I got up, saw that it was 3 in the morning and decided to investigate. What I witnessed when I walked into the kitchen was pure horror. There was a liter of beer EXPLODED all over the place. The carbonation from the secondary fermentation was enough to blow the bottom of the plastic bottle clean off and shoot the beer across the room. I cleaned this up then tried to get back to sleep.

Well, at this point my stomach still hurt and I smelled like stale beer so I was still struggling to sleep at all. I decided that I’d take some Nyquil which finally put me to sleep at about 4:30. The alarm went off two hours later and as I tried to get moving I realized that the Nyquil was hitting me hard. I guess it makes sense as the stuff is supposed to last all night. I was too foggy to even walk so I decided I’d sleep off my delirium and head into work late.

Wow.

Confused

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

So I’ve been taking the bus to work for a week now. Every morning the bus has taken a slightly different route and each bus driver has had a different opinion on whether or not this particular route costs and extra dollar or not. I’ve had to walk anywhere between 6 and 20 blocks depending on where the bus ended up. Today’s bus driver told me I didn’t need to pay an extra dollar – after I paid the extra dollar. So confused.

The Big Hurt

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

It cost me a total of $240 for my car to break. Yes, I’m losing my means of transportation and an additional $240 in towing and mechanic’s costs. Meanwhile taking the bus is going to cost me about $100/month, nearly twice the gas budget of the car. It’s just about time to give up and stay home.

On the bright side, it’s all over and I am rid of that car.

Stop Raining

Three days of taking the bus to work, three days of cold rain. Thanks, I really needed insult piled on top of injury.

The Whole Shebang

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

So, here’s the full story of the car:

Making a right hand turn out of my work parking lot on Tuesday evening the car suddenly came to a stop and then started making an awful engine revving like a jackhammer noise. I tried for a second or two to pull over to the curb but the car was not moving and it was making god-awful noises so I shut her off. Some coworkers and I then pushed the car backwards into the parking lot where it sat for an hour waiting for a tow. It was clear at this point that the right tire was about 6 inches from where it should have been and that the engine was not engaging the drive axle at all. When the tow guy arrived he was poking around to see what was wrong with the car and shouted “Oh SHIT! Shit, man, shit. Wow… shit” when he looked behind the tire at the carnage document in the previous post.

The car was towed home where it sat for two days. On Friday it was towed to the local mechanics who thought it might be a fairly quick repair. However, after they got the car into the shop and looked around at everything they realized the problem was far worse than originally thought AND they could tell it was about to happen to the other side. The estimate for the repairs was over $1200 so I think I will call them tomorrow to say that we’re just going to junk it.

Considering that the car has a junky muffler, leaks water into the carpet and smells like mold, has some pretty beat up tires, and is in need of a major oil change and tuneup anyway, I think it’s probably wise to take that $1200 and invest it into a much newer used car.

Well, I better get to bed so that I can get up early enough for my hour-long commute.

Car Photos

Well, the Skylark is at the shop now. I hope this doesn’t cost too much because, you know, the car is still going to have a loud as hell muffler and smell like mold even after these repairs. I’d rather not plug over $500 into a deafening biohazard.

These pictures demonstrate the extent of the damage.

That Just Hurts

My mechanic has a better website than any one we’ve ever created at work: http://www.riversideautomotive.com/

Seriously now, WTF?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

In the last week at work I introduced major initiatives for new technology, updated our coding standards, started managing our next major website project, and intervened when we were about to make some very serious copyright infringement mistakes on this new website… all for intern wages. I feel like I’m doing a bit much here.

Skylark Swan Song

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

My former roommate, the former mechanic, and I took a look at my car which lurched to a sudden stop outside of the work parking lot yesterday afternoon. Basically, the half-axle became a quarter-axle by snapping in half, the CV joint flew back into the engine compartment, and now when the engine goes to turn the axle it instead rattles around a broken bit of metal no longer attached to anything. Um, wow. This could be it for the green beast so I guess it’s time to get reacquainted with the bus and get A LOT of reading material.
